David E Schteingart, MD
BiographyDr. Schteingart joined the University of Michigan as a fellow in 1959 and has been a Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Diabetes since 1973. His research and clinical interest is in adrenal diseases (Cushing's, adrenal cancer) and obesity. He has 98 publications in peer-reviewed journals, 33 book chapters and 80 abstracts. His laboratory has been interested in animal models for adrenal cancer and pre-clinical studies of treatment based on molecular defects specific to adrenal cancer. Together with his wife, Dr. Monica Starkman, he has been interested in the brain effects of chronic glucocorticoid exposure, using Cushing's disease as a model. With NIH support, their group was the first to show in humans the effect of glucocorticoid excess on the hippocampus and its reversibility after normalization of cortisol levels. Dr. Schteingart has had long standing interest in the treatment of adrenal cancer. In 1993 he founded the Millie Schembechler Adrenal Cancer Program and was its director until 3 years ago. The program has won national and international recognition for assembling a multidisciplinary group of clinicians and investigators.
As director of the NIH-sponsored University of Michigan Training Programs in Clinical Research, Dr. Schteingart has mentored dozens of young investigators in clinical research across disciplines. This program became one of the key components of the University of Michigan Clinical Translation Science Award. He has also played a major role in the area of clinical research training at the national level, having served as president of the Association of Clinical Research Training. He is currently Associate Editor for the Adrenal Section, Year Book of Endocrinology. He is and has been an ad-hoc reviewer for many scientific journals. Dr Schteingart is well recognized at the national and international levels and has participated as a speaker in many national and international meetings.
