Gift in Kind

Your gifts-in-kind are GREATLY APPRECIATED!

The U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center welcomes your interest in donating gift-in-kind items to our adult patients. (To donate children’s items, please call ahead to Mott Community Relations for current needs at 734-764-6874).

Please be aware of the following donation policies we must follow in accepting and distributing in-kind donations.

All policies have been carefully and thoughtfully developed in consideration of patient safety, infection control procedures, attention to confidentiality and the comfort and consideration of all of our patients. Be aware that donated items not meeting the criteria are passed on to other organizations in the community (Goodwill, etc.)

    1. All donation items must be new. We can only give our patients brand new items with store and price tags still attached. We cannot accept donations of used items.

    2. Due to patient safety and privacy, donors are not permitted to distribute gifts to patients and families, even during their own visits to the health center for appointments.

    3. All donations must be given to staff for distribution. We ask that items be dropped off at the Cancer Center Information Desk at the main entrance, Level B-2 lobby. Items are sorted, labeled and distributed to the appropriate areas.

    4. Please keep in mind that hospital policy precludes us from allowing any form of business advertising; please no company business cards or business logo.

Year Round Needs

examples of fleece blankets

Fleece Blanket Project Providing Warmth and Comfort to Cancer Patients

Since 2001, community groups and individuals have made and donated thousands of colorful fleece blankets to patients receiving chemotherapy at the UM Comprehensive Cancer Center. A Girl Scout Leader began referring to the blankets as "Warm Fuzzies" and the name has stuck ever since. The comforting blankets quickly became a hit with patients, both children and adults.

Cancer Center staff would like to insure that every patient at the Cancer Center who undergoes chemotherapy, cancer surgery or is hospitalized receives one of these wonderful blankets!

If you would like to help the Cancer Center meet this goal, how to make a fleece blanket instructions for the project are available in a .pdf document.

Stuffed Heart Project

Make and donate small stuffed hearts for adult patients of the Comprehensive Cancer Center. The hearts are accepted and distributed throughout the year to patients who are receiving treatment for a cancer diagnosis. The hearts are used for two purposes:

  • HEART PROJECT I:
the heart is given to the patients to keep in their pocket for comfort and support.
  • HEART PROJECT II:
is a keepsake for the family once the patient and Music Therapist makes a recording of the patient’s heartbeat and inserts it into the center of the heart.

If you would like to help the Cancer Center meet this goal, how to make a stuffed heart instructions are available in a pdf document.

Hats

Cancer patients benefit from knit/crocheted hats during the winter to brimmed hats, caps and light weight knit during the spring and summer. Hats can be purchased or made. Hats should be made of soft fabric that will not irritate sensitive skin on the scalp. For infection control and patient skin sensitivities fabric must be new.

Gloves / Mittens and Scarves

Cancer patients find that they are cold due to different procedures. Not always knowing that this may happen, it is nice to have new gloves/mittens & scarves on hand for them to be able to use on their trip back home.

Word Search, Sudoku and Crossword Books

Cancer patients may find that they have time where it would be nice to have a distraction. Word Search, Sudoku and Cross Word Books appeal to many of the patients. PLEASE include clicker pencils that do not require a sharpener.
